Rutledge is a very small, rural community, only 3.3 square miles, just east of the Newton County line in Morgan County.  Current population is around 750 to 800.  There are only about 275 households in the community.

Surrounded by farm land and cotton fields, Rutledge’s historic district, only 1/2 block square, sits virtually unchanged since the heyday of the railroad.  Founded in 1871, Rutledge is only about three miles off Interstate 20 between Atlanta and Augusta.  It is an occassional movie and TV filming venue, and offers a number of quaint shops and restaurants within the town center.

Rutledge is the gateway to Hard Labor Creek State Park, a 5804-acre park and golf course named after the small stream that cuts through its boundaries.
